I love these natural materials, and using them to tell stories through animal characters. Animals seem to me to more easily express the feeling or mood of human experience. Commissioned pieces are carefully mapped out in pencil to fulfil a brief, whereas for personal pieces I employ quick, spontaneous marks in ink and paint which allow a more intuitive response and so get to the heart of things. Ink line created with dipped quill or bamboo allow things to stay unpredictable which helps with spontaneity.

Behind the quick impressions is much observation of the natural world. Focusing (a practice of listening to the bodies stories) is also an inspiration.

Considering the impact of what I do, especially environmentally, has always been important in my life and work practices, and so it is a privilege to be working with Fair Trader who put ethical considerations at the forefront of all they do.

Colette has taught art courses for over 25 years at The Art House and other Sheffield venues, helping people rediscover the joy of making images. She also offers tutorials in her home studio, as well as offering Focusing sessions She is open to commissions, particularly ones with animal themes.
