Lindsay Norman is an artist who is well known for creating stylistic characterful animal art.
Also after many years in London and working in the fashion and interiors industry. Basically, she gravitated back to her first love of drawing.
Chiefly working from her home studio in Holmfirth she always draws inspiration from the surrounding British wildlife and is influenced by her design background to produce an abundance of work
predominantly animals with strong characters.
Moreover, when really exploring Lindsay Norman her animals are captured with pastels, charcoals, inks and pencil. With gestural lines and splashes of colour. Basically a dance between abstraction and realism.
Lindsay explains,
“I create an emotional connection with the viewer of my work. Basically, photographic realism isn’t
something that I’m trying to achieve. I mainly work from still images but by using texture and
energetic mark-making, it can create an impressionistic often illustrative feel with lots of
movement. Chiefly I want my animals to have a soul, a story, and a personality.”
Basically, Lindsay can create her own world where the viewer often feels an emotional connection to the
subject.
Quite often animals are offset within the canvas and the placement can suggest a narrative with
very little background to enhance the subject without fussy detailing.
Humour is often part of Lindsay’s work, and it is found within the tilt of a head or the look in the eye.
Consequently, Lindsay’s illustrations are vibrant often full of movement, life, and texture. Additionally, a character is captured with an innate freestyle.
Working predominantly in pastels, charcoals, and pencils these mediums will help the process by
working quickly and spontaneously to retain the life of the subject.
