Anno's Africa visits Fair Trader
Updated: Jun 7, 2018
It was great to have Bee Gilbert, Director of Anno’s Africa, visit Fair Trader last week.
Anno's Africa is a UK based children's arts charity running educational arts projects for children living in slum conditions in Kenya. The charity was set up in memory of Anno Birkin, a young, gifted writer and musician who died in a car crash in 2001, just one month short of his 21st birthday. Anno's Africa has been operating in Nairobi since 2006 and there are currently over 800 children participating in workshops and in the weekly clubs run by sister organization One Fine Day.
They are now looking at setting up an operation in Malawi and we discussed possible ways of working there together, such as Fair Trader raising funds for them by selling some of the art, music or handicrafts produced by their groups.
We also hope some of our supplier communities may one day benefit from the exciting training programs offered by Anno’s Africa in Art, Creative Writing, Dance (including ballet) Drama, Music and Circus skills.
Bee toured the shop to get some ideas and bought loads of goodies from our fair trade suppliers around the world. Bee is off to Malawi next month and we hope she will come back with lots of exciting new product ideas to offer our customers – good luck, Bee!
