Community Garden Week 2022

Last week we held a joint event with the HoTT Edible Group to celebrate Community Garden Week, and were delighted when the sun made a surprise appearance!

HoTT (Holmfirth Transition Town), a community group based in the upper Holme Valley, south of Huddersfield in West Yorkshire, UK, is part of the global Transition Town movement which promotes the building of resilient and sustainable local communities, a key part of which is encouraging self-sufficiency and a low-carbon lifestyle.

In May 2017, HoTT secured a £2,000 grant from the Bright Green Community Trust to start an Incredible Edible Group focusing on community vegetable and fruit growing in the Holme Valley. The Trust has been set up to help fund projects focused on carbon reduction across the Holme Valley Parish and the Graveship of Holme.

The HoTT Edible Group now manage the beautiful community garden opposite Fair Trader, which is open to the public and whose volunteers grow and harvest the produce for members of the community to enjoy free of charge.

On Saturday 9th April, we held an event in the garden to show the community the wonderful work that the HoTT Edible Group are doing there. And, with Stop Food Waste Day coming up at the end of the month, we wanted to show our customers and the community some inventive ways of reducing food waste. We cooked some potato peel soup and baked some chocolate and beetroot cake to hand out on the day and they both went down a treat!

For more information about HoTT, the Edible Group and all of the work they’re doing, you can visit their website and keep an eye on our events page for future happenings!
