It's a small world – Nepal fundraising event

Black Hill may be only 1900ft high compared with Mount Everest’s 29,000 but there is clearly a strong bond of friendship between our community and that of our suppliers in Nepal. The fundraising event on Friday was sold out days in advance, and nearly 40 people were packed into the cavern at the Toll House to listen to Elizabeth and Jonathon Shadbolt talking about the country and its people.

Their experience helping train teachers at remote schools over two years provided some fascinating insights into the challenges facing kids growing up in one of the world’s poorest countries still affected by the aftermath of civil war, poor sanitation, water shortages, poor nutrition and a lack of basic healthcare.

If life was tough then, the pictures of the damage wrought by the recent earthquakes showed what a challenge it will be for even these amazingly resilient people to survive the coming monsoon and then try and rebuild their lives.

Those attending were heartened to hear of the efforts made by the small local charities supported by our brilliant suppliers Aura Que, Danusha, Komodo, Kusan and So Heart Felt, and did their bit on the night by digging deep into their Yorkshire pockets  to contribute to this work.

After the presentations they tucked into Ghurka curries washed down with cold beer, all donated by Fair Trader members, and then enjoyed an awesome folk session with talented local quartet Trouble at Mill who performed free of charge. Even our brilliant staff team, Bethany and Sarah, worked tirelessly all night without pay.

The raffle raised £278 thanks to prizes donated by our generous suppliers, and this together with the gate money and bar takings meant a total of £975 will be donated to our suppliers' three charities from this event.

In the long term, we can all help our friends in Nepal by buying their handicrafts, thus helping small community businesses get back on their feet. So please come along to Fair Trader and take a look at our great collection of fairly traded clothes, jewellery and accessories from Nepal or buy online on this website.
