The Proverbial Hare – Artist Blog

Updated: Nov 10, 2021

We are very excited to introduce you to Helena Forrester, one of the artists who will be showcasing their work at featured@ fair trader for the next few months.

The Proverbial Hare – a range of products based on ink and watercolour paintings by Helena Forrester

Picking up a pencil and set of watercolours after a gap of, ahem … let’s say a couple of decades or so … has been a delight. As a voracious consumer and supporter of art, culture and nature I just couldn’t ignore the challenge to myself to see if I could create the art that I wanted, portraying my surroundings through my filter.

The simplicity of ink and wash (well at least it should appear simple – my inky hands and reams of paper may dispute this ease!) really appeals to me. As I am compelled to walk every day, my poor dog has to put up with me craning my eyes to see if there is a hare or two cavorting up in the fields, or a pheasant disappearing with a squawk into a Cornish hedgerow. I really marvel at nature local and more exotic and imagine them in perhaps less obvious circumstances – my garden birds in wellies being an example of my imagination!!

Holmfirth is the last stop before the hills and moors and as such we are only ever two minutes away from wild and windy countryside. We really are very lucky. We also have a vibrant artistic community alongside people working to create sustainable shopping in the form of Fair Trader, based in a beautiful building and offering a wide range of imaginatively curated original products. I am really proud to be a member, a supplier of arty cards and now a guest artist pop-up! I hope you can pay a visit as you will be rewarded with a range of products that are mindful of our precious world and our impact on it and served by volunteers who really work hard to support these values.
