VerseCycle comes to Holmfirth
There’s a cycling poet coming to town, and where better than Holmfirth with its top-notch on- and off-road routes, to combine riding bikes with a love of creativity?
Caroline Burrows (@verseCycle) writes both poetry and prose and is often inspired by her cycling travels ‘along minor roads and up major hills’. This August and September, on her Turning Pedals into Poems Tour, she’s riding from her home in Bristol as far north as Berwick-Upon-Tweed, performing her work at stops along the way. Caroline also spreads the creative spark by teaching writing workshops on her travels.
The tour comes to Holmfirth on Monday 29th August, when you can join Caroline for an hour of poetry at Fair Trader from 7.30pm. As well as her adventures by bike, Caroline’s poems cover themes including moongazing and observations on the sun, trying to be more environmentally friendly, mental health, love, social commentary and trees. Tickets cost £8, available in advance at the shop.
There’s another chance to meet Caroline in the afternoon on the 29th. From 2pm to 4pm she’s hosting a free Sketching and Poetry Session at Unity Yard on Huddersfield Road. Participants will head outdoors to sketch a leaf of their choice, then be guided into writing a nature poem inspired by their leaf.
Caroline’s poetry has featured on BBC Radio 4, been printed in BBC Sky at Night Magazine, shown at the Sheffield Adventure and Kendal Mountain Film Festivals and been shortlisted for the Sustainability First Art Prize. Her short stories have been published in The National Flash Fiction Anthology, The Charles Causley Trust and The Lancaster One Minute Monologues. She has also written for Cycling UK and Adventure Cyclist magazines.
