Richard Gee will have a range of his artwork in Fair Trader, in the centre of Holmfirth throughout the month of May. He describes himself as a printmaker and painter.
I was born in Halifax and studied for a BA (Hons) Fine Art Degree (painting) at Canterbury College of Art, receiving a 1st Class Hons degree in 1986. I lived in London for many years and specialised in intaglio printmaking, working for prestigious etching studios including The Print Centre (Covent Garden), Hope Sufferance Press (Camberwell) and Paupers Press (Hoxton). Through these studios I worked with leading printmakers and have editioned prints for world renowned artists such as Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin, Paula Rego, Anish Kapoor, Sir Terry Frost, Eileen Cooper and Sir Anthony Gormley.
I returned to West Yorkshire in 1997 where I have continued to paint and print as well as supporting students learning the skill of print making at Leeds University.
My work is a celebration of the mutability and liveliness of organic forms through the medium of oil painting and printmaking. My work inhabits an imagined place between perceived reality and a dreamlike subconsciousness. I try to harness a rich expressive and painterly iconology to the possibilities offered by the slipperiness of oil paint on board, paper or canvas to create a narrative outcome. This approach also informs my printmaking. Much of the imagery is a personal narrative combined with the activity of drawing, painting and printmaking itself.
I have exhibited widely and have work in the collection of Kirklees Museums and Galleries. I am delighted to have the opportunity to show my work at Fair Trader.
